How About Some Dr. Seuss?

Poems

For Language Arts Class we are learning about a famous pastime and creative means of writing: poetry. Though some people think of poetry as sentimental and boring, it isn't always like that. You can really write a poem about anything you want, whether it be sports, or flowers, or yourself! Believe it or not, rap is also a form of poetry... not very sentimental anymore, huh? There are many types of poems, such as rap, including haiku, cinquain, clerihew, All About Me (or I AM), and BioPoems. As a part of this unit, we have had to write some poems ourselves (obviously). Some poems I think were particularly good on my part were an I AM Poem (about me), a poem about a nauseating meal for 3 of my teachers, and a clerihew poem. Though these 3 rhyme, not all poems have to rhyme. Try making your own poems! I have underlined the part that I added, so whatever is underlined you can delete and add your own information.

I AM Poem

I am wise and nice.
I wonder why cats chase mice.
I hear voices speaking.
I see the pipes leaking.
I want a cheesecake slice.
I am wise and nice.

I pretend that I’m sleeping,
Though I feel like leaping.
I touch my laptop’s keys.
I worry that I’ll fall to my knees.
I cry when things aren’t precise.
I am wise and nice.

I understand school.
I say to always keep your mind cool.
I dream of reaching the height of fame.
I try to stay ahead of the game.
I hope to remember my parents’ advice.
I am wise and nice.

For the next poem, I have created the actual poem (there is no outline like the I AM Poem) so just tear out the entire thing, and add your own gross and repulsive foods to the list. Then, make a poem that rhymes just like mine.

Guest Recommendations

(these are the real poems)

Mr. Baker’s Dream Meal

First, I’ll serve you
A lizard lover stew
Trust me, after eating it
You’ll puke in the loo.

For appetizers
You’ll enjoy
a kidney mix
and some fried brain of koi.

Later on
for the main meal
you’ll get a diaphragm bowl
it’s a great deal!

Mrs. Cossette’s Favorite Meal

Would you like to drink
A vanilla eyeball smoothie?
Or would you like brain fluid?
It tastes rather groovy.

Have the alligator scales,
Or some live lice
Even though it might
Not be the right choice

After it all
To top it off
Try the fried intestines
Up in our loft

Mrs. Thomas’ Daily Lunch

She loves the wax slime
And even the snot soup
But the fried ligament stew
She thinks is goop

The heart bruschetta
Is a regular snack
But the bicep entree
She forgets to pack

Her eyeball float
Doesn’t make it through the day
As much as she tries
To keep the temptation at bay

For the clerihew, you will have a totally different poem. The first line has to be a name, the second has to be something that rhymes with the name, and the third and fourth can be anything random, but they have to rhyme.

Clerihew

Mr. Baker
Loves the Lakers
When they won,
He partied with his son

Another example that I didn't create...

Mr.Shaw
Loves to draw
But his paintings
Have caused many faintings

The Sunshine State

My Trip To Florida

Courtesy of Digital-Topo-Maps.com
Over April break (April 14-21), my family and I took a trip to Florida. Florida, nicknamed the Sunshine State, is a warm, tropical state on the south-eastern coast of America. We flew in on Saturday evening, April 14th, and immediately after we went to a family function. The next day, we went to a baby shower in Tampa, Florida. On Monday, we checked into the resort that we were staying at, Westgate Vacation Villas. That same day, my aunt and uncle from Jacksonville, FL drove in, and they also checked into the resort. We just drove around town and the resort, enjoying the rest of the warm day. As we soon noticed, the resort was humongous.   It was so big, it had its own Town Hall! On Tuesday, we woke up early in order to arrive at one of the highlights of our trip: Epcot. We got in as it opened, at 9:00 AM, and stayed there for 12 hours, until it closed at 9:00 PM. We made sure to go on every ride. The best part of Epcot was the famous Soarin'. Soarin' is a hang-gliding simulation, imitating the effect of flying over the state of California. You sit on a long bench, and they suspend you in the air. The giant, concave screen in front of you makes the entire scene look real. And to top it all off, the smell of everything you pass, and the wind in your face make it an unforgettable experience. After that, on Wednesday, we drove for 2 hours back to Jacksonville, where we met my older cousin, who is a college student. We spent 2 days there, before flying back home on Thursday. Our Florida trip is definitely a trip that I will never forget, and I hope to go back there someday.

The Beginning of the End...

The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner is a wonderful book. As you probably know, the movie is coming out in a couple of months. It is a great book, about a bunch of boys who get their memories wiped, and are trapped in a giant maze (hence the name). Thomas, the main character, is the last boy to arrive, and the next day, a girl arrives, the first girl to ever come to the Maze. The Gladers (the boys who "live" there) have been trying to solve the Maze for two years, but they have not found a solution. When Thomas and the girl, Teresa, arrive, everything starts to change. The Walls surrounding the Maze stop closing every night, causing the bloodthirsty monsters in the Maze, Grievers, to eat one boy every night. This causes the boys and girl to try harder in the Maze, and finally,Thomas makes a giant sacrifice to help get some of his memories back and find the exit, therefore facing death. To find out what happens, read the book, The Maze Runner, or watch the movie coming out in a couple of months.

If you have read the book, please leave a comment about your thoughts, or anything else you want to add, but please don't give away the ending to those who haven't read it!! Remember, comments are always appreciated!

Crank Up The Volume!

On New Year's Eve, my family and a bunch of my friends got together and had a wonderful party in a banquet hall. We had a karaoke session, a talent show, and a dance party. In the talent show, I did a violin performance on an Indian song called "Chura Liya Hai" from the movie "Yaadon Ki Baaraat." My brother did a piano piece called "Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam" from the Hindi movie "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge." Check out this video of us performing, and the actual music videos for the songs.

Objection!

JV Mock Trial

In my school system, there is a special program called the Student Enrichment Program (S.T.E.P.). S.T.E.P. is for students who get an A or higher in math and language arts. My S.T.E.P. class got to participate in a JV Mock Trial. A mock trial is when the S.T.E.P. classes create a fake court case, and we all act as attornies and witnesses. We put together this trial, and one day, after school, we present it in front of a real attorney, who then grades from a 1 - 10. We did this on Friday, January 20th. I was an attorney for the defense, which means that I was trying to prove that Jackie Demathers, the suspect, only robbed the gas station under duress (he was threatened). I had to dress up in a suit and tie, and present my case. We were against our cross-town rival, the other school in the district. The judge scored us based on how well we acted our part, and how good our questions were. All six S.T.E.P. teams from my school won, beating the other school 6 to 0. I was one of the only people who got a ten, according to my judge. I got a 10 on my closing argument, which the "speech" that I had to give at the end of the trial, concluding all the events and testimonies in the trial.

2012!

In this new year, many people believe that in some way, all beings on Earth will perish. Some people believe that tidal waves will attack the land. This is because glaciers in the polar regions are starting to melt, and may also cause flooding of the world. Others believe that global warming will affect the natural course of the planet. The reason global warming is happening is because so many people are polluting the air around us. Some more people believe that natural disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, will kill all of us. Even so, I don't think any of these will happen. The world may be thrown off balance by the humans, but it definitely won't manage to destroy all of us.

What do you think? Do you believe one of these theories? Or do you have your own? Remember, comments are always appreciated!
